Boulder, Colorado, June 6th, 2008 - April 2008 was a positive month for the outdoor industry, as sales grew 6% in dollars against April 2007, according to the Outdoor Industry Association Outdoor Topline Report (produced by the Leisure Trends Group).

Sales grew across all outdoor retail channels (Chain, Specialty and Internet) and across all four major product categories (Equipment, Equipment Accessories, Footwear and Apparel). Especially strong dollar growth was seen in equipment and apparel with 11% and 12% respective gains in dollar sales for the month.

Paddlesport industry dollar sales ended the month dead even with April 2007. However, all boat sales (58% of total April dollars) increased 4% in units and 1% in dollars. The average retail selling price for a kayak was $823 this month, compared to $813 in April 2007.

Category and Channel Growth Remains Positive as Quarter Two Gets Underway

Outdoor specialty stores gained 2% in units and 6% in dollars over April 2007. All four major product categories increased dollar sales for the month. The largest dollar gains came out of apparel (9%) and equipment (8%).

Outdoor chain stores gained 5% and 8% in units and dollars respectively, compared to the same month last year. Apparel, footwear and equipment accessories each increased both unit and dollar sales for the period. Outdoor equipment gained 6% in units but lost 4% in dollars as the product mix shifted away from higher retail-priced items such as sleeping bags and tents and over to lower priced items such as packs.

Outdoor internet stores continued healthy growth in both units and dollars, with gains of 30% and 29% respectively over April 2007. All four major categories enjoyed double-digit unit and dollar increases for the month.
