Figures reported in the SGB Retail Top 100 are for retail volume in the U.S. and come from a variety of Sources inside and outside the respective companies. Some figures represent estimates. In certain instances, we chose to report market estimates over figures reported by the company itself, believing those estimates to be more accurate. Unless otherwise noted, figures include sales generated from  brick-and-mortar, CATalog and Internet operations.

Like the advanced levels of a video game, the sporting goods retail landscape is becoming ever more chAllenging. In both the old-school Pac-Man game and in todays realm of mergers and acquisitions, victory is contingent on a series of logical maneuvers.

Of course, the longer one plays, the more skilled one becomes-and the faster and smarter the competition gets. The ultimate goal, of course, is to grow and thrive by feasting on those that are smaller and slower, while avoiding being eaten by monsters.
At present, however, it is extremely difficult for small players to run and hide. Monsters, created by ongoing consolidation, are lurking everywhere. For example, the first 15 players on this years Retail Top 100 list all scored big, having racked up sales ranging from $1 billion to $17.1 billion. (In contrast, Johnny Macs Sporting Goods, ranked number 100 on the list, had sales of $23.5 million.)

While Retail Top 100 lists from years past boasted many small, regional chains and a few multi-regional powerhouses, most of the top spots today are occupied by mega-retailers that rake in huge sales via catalog operations, Internet sites, as well as hundreds, if not  thousands, of brick-and-mortar stores. Back in the day, sporting goods retailers competed primarily against each other, but in the current, accelerated game, they must match wits with mass merchants, as well.To survive this Darw inian madness and to make it to the next  level of play, retailers of all sizes would be well advised to work on  their agility and strategy, and to build on their strengths. Going  forward, the sporting goods game will no longer be just about
